Privacy Policy
marked is a detective story told through evidence. Reading a case needs no account, and the app is built to know as little about you as it can. This policy covers the marked app for iPhone and this website, marked.page.
The short version
- Reading needs no account. Cases, evidence and chapters open without signing in.
- Signing in is optional. You only need an account to cast a verdict, collect points and appear on the leaderboard.
- No tracking, no ads. No advertising, no analytics SDKs, nothing that follows you across other apps or websites.
- You can delete your account from inside the app, and it takes your history with it.
If you sign in
Signing in is handled by Apple or Google through Firebase Authentication. We never see your password. From then on we hold:
- Your email address — passed to us by Apple or Google and kept in Firebase Authentication. Other players never see it, and we send no marketing to it. If you use Sign in with Apple’s Hide My Email, we only ever see the relay address.
- An account identifier — a random string that ties your verdicts and points to you.
- The name you choose — shown publicly on the leaderboard next to your score. It doesn’t have to be your real name: Apple or Google may offer your real name as a starting point, and you can replace it at any time.
- Your game history — which cases you played, the verdict you gave, whether it was right, and the points it earned.
All of it serves one purpose: running the game — scoring, the leaderboard and your profile. It is never sold, never used for advertising and never used to track you elsewhere.
What stays on your iPhone
To work as intended, the app keeps a small amount of data in its private storage on the device:
- whether you have finished onboarding and whether you want notifications;
- which updates you have already opened, and your recent searches;
- the language you chose;
- cached copies of case files — text and images — so the board opens quickly and works offline.
This never leaves the device. Deleting the app deletes it.
Notifications
Release notifications are scheduled locally on your iPhone from the public case schedule. There are no push tokens, and we don’t know whether you turned notifications on. You can switch them off at any time in the app or in iOS Settings.
Loading case content
Case files are delivered from Google Firebase — Cloud Firestore, Cloud Storage and Cloud Functions. As with any internet request, Google’s servers receive technical information such as your IP address, device type and the time of the request, and may keep it briefly in server logs for security and reliability. We don’t combine it with anything else and don’t use it to identify you. Google processes it under its Firebase privacy terms.
The map
Alderwick, the city in the cases, is invented; the map is our own data, drawn through MapTiler, which receives the request’s IP address and which tiles were asked for. The app never asks for and never reads your device location.
This website
marked.page is a static site on our own server. It sets no cookies and serves no third-party scripts. The pages of the site count views so we can see how many people came and from where: each view is one anonymous record holding the page, the browser’s language, the referring site, an utm_source if the link carried one, a device class (mobile, tablet, desktop) and a time zone. No identifier of you or your browser is stored, the records can’t be linked to each other or to an account, and the counter respects Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. The server keeps no access logs. Domain lookups are answered by Cloudflare DNS, as described in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy. This page and the support page load nothing at all.
If you write to us we receive your email address and whatever you choose to send. We use it to reply, and we delete the correspondence on request.
Deleting your account
In the app, open Settings → your profile → Delete account (step by step, and by email if you no longer have the app: Delete your account). This removes your profile, your name, your game history and your place on the leaderboard, and deletes the sign-in record itself. It cannot be undone, and there is no separate request to make. Backups are overwritten within 30 days.
Children
marked is not directed at children and doesn’t knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13.
Your rights
You can see everything we hold about you on your profile screen, change your name there, and delete the lot with one button. For anything else — a copy of your data, a correction, a question — write to hello@marked.page and we’ll answer within 30 days.
Changes
If this policy changes we’ll update this page and the date at the top, and note material changes in the app’s release notes.
